Test It Tuesday – The Power Vest

The latest “Test It Tuesday” took flight after our daytime executive producer Jennifer Sloan scanned the New York Post  one morning.  She found a story about a power vest – made of the same material as scuba wear - created by a woman from New York who called Pennsylvania home.

The premise is relatively simple. A weighted vest and combination spandex pan is worn during workouts and, over time, it will help reduce cellulite on the body and make you stronger. It’s really not that much different than basketball player practicing with ankle weights so that come game time they can jump higher.

The vest doesn’t boast dramatic changes and isn’t for body builders or those who are excessively overweight. The make sasy its for the average woman ( or man ) looking to tone up and drop those hard-to-lose pounds.

Katie works with me here at WTAE on our website and was more than willing to give the vest and pants a try. While she’s in good shape already, she would not mind getting rid of what she calls those “holiday hips”. She works out intensely one hour every day, so she was a perfect candidate to give the vest a try.

The folks at UPMC helped us with the measuring of Katie’s weight and fat composition – both before and after our test and here is what we discovered. While Katie’s weight loss was considerably less, she managed to turn 3 pounds of fat muscle into lean muscle. As you well know, when you first try to lose weight, you turn fat into muscle and then the weight loss process begins.

In the end, Katie is leaner and toner … and she believes if she keeps using the vest, even better results are in the offing. We feel the same way and that’s why the vest got three stars out of four. The only down part that we could find was the weights in the vest pocket could not be felt nearly as strongly as the weights in the shorts. Once you wear the vest for a while, you don’t even notice the weights. The same cannot be said about the weights in the shorts.

The vest is available for $75 and that includes 12 pounds worth of weights for the pockets. Just ask for Rene at the e-mail address nyknyc@aol.com or you can see the vest specs for yourself at nyknyc.com.
